“There is no honor in extinguishing a fire that could have been prevented”
The Palatine Fire Prevention Division takes a proactive approach to limiting the loss of life and property from fire or hazardous condition. We perform fire and life safety inspections in existing multi-family, commercial, industrial, and institutional occupancies. Additionally, we conduct two inspections in each school per year, once in the fall and again in the spring. We also review building plans for new construction or remodeling, and conduct site inspections during construction. In addition, each year we inspect the numerous special events such as, all village festivals, craft fairs and carnival rides.
The Fire Prevention Division performs annual inspections of existing buildings to verify that they are in compliance with the Village of Palatine Code of Ordinances, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and International Building and Fire Codes (IBC, IFC). We are currently using the 2000 edition of the NFPA Life safety Code, and the 2009 edition of the IBC and IFC. Annually our inspectors walk through the buildings with a business or building owner to check for things like electrical problems, improper storage, heating equipment conditions, accessible egress, and other hazardous conditions. Our inspectors will also inspect emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, and hood and duct systems to assure that they are being properly maintained and tested.
Community Services requires that five sets of building plans be submitted, and one set of these drawings is then forwarded to the Fire Prevention Division for review. All plans are reviewed in-house, and the Fire Prevention Division is responsible for the proper design and installation of fire alarms, automatic fire sprinklers, and special suppression systems like restaurant hood and duct or automotive paint spray booths. We will review all construction plans to verify that they comply with applicable codes and building standards, then conduct inspections during the construction process to field verify that the approved plans are being followed. We are always ready to meet with, or answer any questions the building owner or contractor may have. Once all the construction is completed, and just before the business is set to open we will perform one last fire and life safety inspection before final approval is given.
Finally, the Fire Prevention Division will perform inspections of private residences upon request. During these voluntary inspections an inspector will walk through the residence with the owner, and point out possible hazardous conditions. The homeowner can accept and correct the condition, or ignore our recommendations.
The Fire Prevention Division is under the supervision of the Fire Marshal and has a staffing of one Senior Inspector, Secretary, and eight part-time fire inspectors. All inspectors have a State Fire Prevention Inspector I certificate and are members of the Fire Department. Our office is located in the Village Hall, 200 E Wood St. Hours of operation are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday.
