Neighborhood Based Policing
The Palatine Police Department’s Neighborhood Based Policing Program is based upon the philosophy of community policing and the strategies of problem oriented policing. In order to provide the best policing services possible, we are driven to be proactive in our effort to reduce crime and improve the quality of life for the residents of Palatine. Geographically, the Village is broken down into seven police beats. The boundaries of each beat were determined by such factors as population and calls for service. Each beat has officers permanently assigned on the three shifts, along with a beat sergeant who coordinates the efforts of those officers. Having the officers assigned to a particular area gives them ownership in what happens in the beat and a desire to make it the best it can be. The officers also have the benefit of getting to know the residents and business owners of a smaller, regular patrol area. The officers of the varying beats attend block parties, homeowners meetings, and check with business owners to update emergency contact files in an effort to keep in touch with the community and address the concerns they may have.
When officers identify a problem in the beat, there is a formal process put in place to address it. The reporting officer will do such things as speak with residents and obtain crime statistics to identify trends in time and location in an effort to determine the root cause of the problem. A written action plan is then put into place with the approval of the beat sergeant. Once the problem solving effort is completed, the officer and beat sergeant will analyze the results and decide whether or not the problem has been corrected. Should they determine that more work needs to be done, they will change tactics and continue. While officers are on continuous patrol in the beat, it is the residents who are the eyes and ears of the neighborhood. We are always looking for your help in keeping Palatine safe.
While you should always call 911 immediately to report suspicious or criminal activity, feel free to contact your beat sergeant at (847) 359-9000 regarding any general questions, concerns or ideas you may have. It is with the cooperative effort between the community and the members of the Palatine Police Department that we will keep Palatine a safe and enjoyable place to live.
