639 E. Dundee Rd. Fire at Payless Shoes
April 19, 2011
On Tuesday, April 19 at 12:44 p.m., the Palatine Fire Department responded to a report of a fire in the back room of Payless Shoes at 639 E. Dundee Rd. An employee stated there was a fire behind the refrigerator in the back of the store. An employee of a neighboring business had used a portable extinguisher on the fire but did not completely put it out. The first Palatine Fire Department unit arrived on the scene 3 minutes later and found smoke in the showroom area. The firefighters used fire extinguishers from the fire engine to completely extinguish the fire.
There were no customers in the store at the time of the fire and both employees had evacuated prior to the fire departments arrival.
20 members of the Palatine Fire Department along with crews from the Arlington Heights Fire Department and Long Grove Fire Department responded to the scene.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
The Palatine Fire Department would like to emphasize the importance of always knowing where the emergency exits are whenever you are away from home. Just like in your home, you should have two escape routes in case there is a fire.
