Caring for Your Newly Seeded Parkway

Due to a water main break, sewer main break, snow plow damage or other problem, the parkway turf in front of your home may be damaged or destroyed. To maintain an attractive appearance to the parkways and the Village as a whole, restoration work will be performed on your parkway to repair damaged turf areas. After the seed and topsoil has been applied, we ask for your assistance in helping it to become established.

The following steps need to be taken for the best results:

  • Water the entire seeded area thoroughly until moist to a 4 inch depth. The top inch of soil should stay moist at all times.
  • Watering should be repeated 2 or even 3 times each day if the weather is hot enough to require it. Frequent watering is the only way to maintain adequate surface moisture.
  • After 2 to 3 weeks of growth, watering can usually be shifted to every other day, and then every 3 days later on until fully established.
  • Once the grass has sprouted, filled in and reached a height of 3 to 4 inches, it can be cut.
  • Avoid applying any chemical weed control in newly seeded areas until grass has been mowed twice.

Your cooperation is essential to help the seed establish. Quicker establishment means fewer weeds, so it is important to stay vigilant with watering the area. If you have any questions, please contact the Forestry Division at (847) 705-5200.
