Fire Prevention

The Palatine Fire Prevention Division takes a proactive approach to limiting the loss of life and property from fire or hazardous condition. We perform fire and life safety inspections in existing multi-family, commercial, industrial, and institutional occupancies. Additionally, we conduct inspections in each school semi-annually. We also review building plans for new construction or remodeling, and conduct site inspections during construction. In addition, each year we inspect the numerous special events such as, all village festivals, craft fairs and carnival rides.

The Fire Prevention Division is under the supervision of the Fire Marshal and has a staffing of one full-time inspector, and six part-time fire inspectors. All inspectors are certified by the Office of the State Fire Marshal as Fire Inspector I. Many inspectors maintain a variety of certifications beyond that of Fire Inspector I.

The Fire Prevention Division performs annual inspections of existing buildings to verify that they are in compliance with the Village of Palatine Code of Ordinances, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), and International Building and Fire Codes (IBC, IFC). Annually our inspectors walk through the buildings with a business or building owner to check for things like electrical hazards, improper storage, heating equipment conditions, accessible egress, and other hazardous conditions. Our inspectors will also inspect emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, fire alarms, fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, and hood and duct systems to assure that they are being properly maintained and tested.
