Care for Restored Parkway

Due to a water main break, sewer repair, snow plowing or other emergency work, the parkway turf in front of your home may be damaged or destroyed. To maintain an attractive appearance to the parkways and the Village as a whole, restoration work will be performed on your parkway to repair damaged turf areas. Crews will level out any damaged areas and then apply grass seed. After the seed and topsoil has been applied, we ask for your assistance in helping it to become established.

The following steps should be taken for the best results:

  • The top inch of soil should stay moist at all times. This may take only 2-3 minutes of watering or 5-6 minutes (or sometimes longer), depending on your sprinkler system and the soil type.
  • Watering should be repeated 2 or even 3 times each day if the weather is hot enough to require it. Frequent watering is the only way to maintain adequate surface moisture.
  • After about 2 to 3 weeks of growth, watering can usually be shifted to every other day, and then every 3 days later on until fully established.

Once the grass has sprouted, filled in and reached a height of 3 to 4 inches, it can be cut. Avoid applying any weed control products in newly seeded areas until the grass has been mowed at least twice.

Your assistance is essential to help the seed germinate and establish. Quicker establishment means fewer weeds, so it is important to stay vigilant with watering the area.

If you believe your grass was damaged by the Village, report it as soon as it is noticed to the Public Works Department at (847) 705-5200 or at PublicWorks@palatine.il.us.
